Honey Creek State Park offers rolling, wooded hills that serve as a backdrop to Rathbun Lake, one of Iowa's largest lakes. Congress authorized the construction of Rathbun Lake in 1954 because south central Iowa's Chariton River Valley was susceptible to flood and drought problems. The dam was completed in 1969 u the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. The lake provides flood protection for 149,300 Acres of land along the Chariton RIver.
Visitors can enjoy a wide range of activities like biking, bird watching and camping and can have fun on the lake by doing things like jet skiing, fishing, and kayaking.
