State: Virginia

Park: Chippokes Plantation State Park

Age: 18

Bio: I grew up in a Virginia state park with my parents and older brother. Most of my childhood days were spent exploring the many ravines, creeks, and back woods of the park or chasing chickens or the occasional cow that dared to cross paths with a six-year-old. I've also been home schooled for most of my life, which gave me more opportunities to volunteer and expand my learning horizons by interacting with a variety of people and history. I was a crew-member in the Youth Conservation Core program for two years, my first at Fairy Stone State Park in 2008 and then my second at Twin Lakes State Park in 2010. I now live New Kent, Virginia with my family and my favorite past times include: knitting, reading, working outside, the occasional kayaking trip and fidgeting with my latest art or craft project.

Hannah's Updates

I Am A State Park Ambassador Because: I've always been around parks; lived in a park, taken pictures in parks, gone on vacations in parks, worked in parks etc.. The program seems like one that will help people to understand just how important our parks are by showing them the many opportunities they can have for little cost that's right next door! I also think that people have forgotten how good it is to be outside and in nature. This saddens me and I'd like to have the chance to persuade others to embrace the beauty of our country and individual uniqueness of each state park.

Schools Attended: Home schooled (Bob Jones University and Calvet schools), New Kent Highschool

First State Park: First Landing State Park

Favorite State Park: Chippokes Plantation State Park and James River Sate Park

Park I Am Dying To Visit: Natural Tunnel

I've Visited State Parks In: North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia

Coolest Thing I've Seen In Parks: When I was little I used to enjoy sitting outside before a thunderstorm at our home in Chippokes State Park. We lived in an old slave quarters that over looked a cow pasture and the James River. I used to love watching the lightning (and occasional water spout)come down the river and I often (much to my mother's later displeasure)would stay outside until the lightning was right on top of our house to try and get a better picture. That doesn't seems very exciting but after you've moved to a swamp surrounded by trees you REALLY tend to miss it.

Interests: Cullinary arts, literature, architecture, and exploring new places.

Music Played At My Campfire: Beatles, John Denver, and a few Monty Pithon tunes

What Not To Miss In My State's Parks: Those obnoxious people who sit around the campfire and sing Monty Pithon tunes.

Who I Would Go On A Hike With If I Could: The beauty of hiking is that you can enjoy it with almost anyone, but friends are always a plus.

This Sums It All Up For Me: Life is too short to be spent under fluorescent lights.
