First Day Hike at Devil's Lake State Park in Wisconsin

by AJ Marz

The First Day Hike at Devil's Lake State Park was icy, cold, windy, and pretty amazing. A handful of us braved the elements to meet up with Sue, the Park Naturalist, to take a hike on the Grottos trail. The hike was about 1 mile and lasted just about 1 hour.

Along the way Sue told us about some of the history of Devil's Lake State Park. It is hard to imagine, but there used to be hotels by the lake, and cottages. Now all that remains is a few houses and some old foundation.

As we continued, the snow began to fall and it became just a very peaceful and serene hike. We happened to pass a snowman who seemed to be taking a break from the hike.

We didn't see many animals, but there were definitely signs that they were around.

All in all, it was a good day. It felt great to be a part of the first ever First Day Hike at Devil's Lake State Park.
