Nockamixon State Park

by Jill Kauffman

On Sunday, May 10 I had the chance to visit Nockamixon State Park. It was a hot day, but that didn’t stop plenty of people from coming to the park. Nockamixon State Park, which is 5,286-acres, is located in Bucks County. Lake Nockamixon is 1,450 acres and provides plenty of opportunity for fishing, boating, and windsurfing.

I was impressed with the facilities at Nockamixon State Park. There is a large boat rental area, a marina, several picnic areas, and a swimming pool complex that includes a one-half acre pool with two waterslides, a shallow end with fountains for children, dressing rooms, first aid station and snack bar. The pool, which opens at 11, had people waiting for the facilities to open. I was a bit envious of them, but once I started my hike I forgot about the heat.

In the first few minutes of the hike, I saw a woodpecker feeding her baby. Other birds spotted include a heron, an eagle, and a turkey and her young, which I managed to get a quick photo of. All of these birds were seen from the paved path and parking lots of the day use area. After exploring the day use area, I drove to another part of the park and walked the Sterner Mill Hiking Area. This area is composed of several loop trails and was much quieter than the day use area. I always enjoy hiking, but I think the bird watching was one of my favorite parts of this trip.

Cabins are available if you’d like to stay the night, and there are several campgrounds near the park. Otherwise, it is the perfect place to spend the day with friends and family. You can swim, bike, rent a boat, or just relax and have a picnic.
