While having a fun picnic, a couple was attacked by a black bear at the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia, North Carolina. Fortunately, they survived the attack and were treated for injuries at Mission Hospital last Sept 29, 2021.
A parkway spokesperson announced the forced closure of the trails of this popular spot in North Carolina. The black bear is most likely to be euthanized due to the incident.
The attack might be due to the couple’s dog barking, which may have irritated the bear, who turned defensive but suddenly charged and attacked the couple and their dog. The status of the dog is unknown.
If guests are attacked by a black bear, rangers recommend defending and fighting back using any object available or to be ready with equipment that may be used to keep everyone safe from bear attacks. This is because bears might see people and their pets as prey.
