The snowy plovers are an endangered species that California wants to protect.
They are fenced off at the Oceana Dunes where normally the fence would go up in March and come down on October 1 to protect the birds during the nesting season. It was however voted unanimously by the California Coastal Commission on March 18, 2021, to permanently enclose the area in order to better protect the birds’ habitat.
However, on October 1, 2021, California State Parks opened the 300-acre area was opened the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area making the birds exposed to the dangers of both humans and vehicles.
They are very vulnerable and considered threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act.
