West Virginia State Parks nationwide are encouraging everyone to participate in the First Day Hikes for free on New Year’s Day.

These hikes vary in terms of length and difficulty so park visitors may walk within their comfort zones. Most hikes range from one to three miles and are suitable for all ages.

First Day Hikes are free and designed to showcase the natural beauty of our state parks. Guides will provide participants with information on the area’s history, wildlife, and points of interest.

Hikers should dress in layers to be prepared for winter temperatures. Bring along water and snacks for longer walks.

Guided hikes are planned for the following state parks in West Virginia:

  • Blackwater Falls State Park
  • Cacapon Resort State Park
  • Cass Scenic Railroad State Park
  • Chief Logan State Park
  • North Bend State Park
  • Pipestem Resort State Park
  • Twin Falls Resort State Park
  • Tygart Lake State Park

Additional information on First Day Hikes can be found on the West Virginia State Parks web page.
