Hāpuna means a spring or spring-fed pool. Hāpuna Bay was named for Leina-Hāpuna, an ali’i (chief) who was married to Kalaoa. They were both master riddlers.

How To Get There

To reach Hapuna Beach, you have to travel north of Kailua-Kona till you reach mile marker 70. Once you reach the marker located on Highway 19, you will find a sign signaling the entrance to the beach. Travel for 1/4 mile towards the ocean till you reach the parking lot.

Admission Fees

Residents of Hawaii can visit the beach for free, while out-of-state visitors have to pay $5 per person. Vehicle parking costs extra.

Commercial PUC Tour vehicles with 1-7 passengers have to pay $10. Vehicles with 8-25 will be charged $20 as admission fee. Tour vehicles with 26 or more passengers have to pay an admission fee of $40.

Smoking, including E-cigarettes, and the use of tobacco products in State Parks, is prohibited.


  • No Motorized Vehicles/ATV’s.
  • No Bicycles.
  • No Open Fires.
  • No Littering/Dumping.
  • No Camping.
  • No Smoking
  • Campsites are not an allowable travel quarantine facility.
  • Non-residents must meet State and County travel guidelines prior to check in.
  • All guests must be household members sharing the same address.
  • Guests must provide their own liquid hand soap and hand sanitizer.
  • Set up time is no earlier than 2:00 pm.
  • All campers must be present during mandatory check-in with staff at 5 pm.
  • Guests will be required to wear a mask when going to and from campsite, lodge and bathrooms.
  • Please practice safe distancing rules and guidelines of 6 ft from other visitors/employees in the area.
