Authorities are currently finding the whereabouts of the individuals who circulated a flier advertising an Octoberfest event at Lake James State Park. The fliers stated “Octoberfest, October 23rd, 24th, 2021, Lake James State Park, 7321 NC-126, Nebo,” with further details on vendor booth prices, different items with discounts like furniture, jewelry, antiques, and clothes.
There is also an email address to contact the host for more information. The fliers are circulated around the areas of McDowell and Burke.
Public Information Officer with N.C. Division Parks and Recreation Katie Hill said they were informed of the flier by the McDowell County Chamber of Commerce.
She verified to the newspaper there is no such event scheduled at the park on Oct. 23 and 24. They already alerted the public by releasing a photo of the flier with the word “SCAM” on the local media.
A local news company tried to contact the details on the flier to find information posing as an interested vendor. They received a reply from someone who identified himself as Guisupe Melievas and asking them to fill out the attached form and submit it.
The news company then sent the image released by the park officials, the flier with the words “SCAM” written on it, and asked if he would like to respond to the accusation. Melievas replied with, “What? Who said so?” Of which they responded that the image was sent by Lake James State Park. The scammer didn’t reply after that.
Burke County Sheriff’s Office is already investigating the lead.
