Indiana Dunes National Park closes beaches, and water operations as orange material appear to have leaked from a U.S. steel mill into Lake Michigan.
Portage Mayor Sulynch began receiving calls around 5:50 pm on Sunday, about an unknown substance in the water near the exit of Portage’s US Steel Midwest plant, then heading for Lake Michigan along the Burns Canal.
Lynch told the Times (Northwest Indiana) that Portage Marina employees already collected samples for analysis. As per the Indiana Environmental Management Department representative, the state agencies were already investigating the case.
Consequently, Indiana Dunes National Park closed the riverwalk, lakefront, ports, and all its beaches until further notice.
