Many state park lakes ban gas outboards outright, allowing only electric propulsion at no-wake speed. That reshapes the buying question: not gas vs. electric, but which motor fits a jon boat, canoe, or kayak and runs all day on one battery. See our packing lists for the rest of your kit.
This guide sizes motors for boats park anglers actually use β 12-16 ft jon boats, canoes, kayaks, 600-1,500 lb loaded β around two numbers: thrust (push vs. wind/current) and amp draw (battery runtime). We cover transom mounts, step-up bow mounts, and the electric-only lake and registration rules that catch anglers off guard. Batteries: our trolling motor battery guide.

How to choose a trolling motor for a small boat
- Thrust, sized to loaded weight. ~2 lb per 100 lb fully loaded is a floor: single kayaks/canoes need 30-36 lb, two-person jon boats 40-55 lb. Wind pushes that higher.
- Shaft length. Measure the mount point to the water, add 20″ (Minn Kota) or 16″ (MotorGuide), round up. When torn, buy longer.
- Freshwater vs. saltwater. Saltwater models add an anode and marine hardware, ~10-20% more β unneeded unless the boat also sees brackish/coastal water.
- Hand vs. foot control. Tiller’s smaller footprint suits small craft. Foot control frees hands but needs deck space most small boats lack.
- Battery pairing. Amp draw β thrust in pounds at full throttle (30 lb β 30A) β see our trolling motor battery guide.
Before you buy: confirm the lake allows electric propulsion and whether a motor changes your registration class (below). Need a launch site? Try the park finder.

Minn Kota Endura C2 30
For canoes, kayaks, and light jon boats on freshwater no-wake lakes, the Endura C2 30 hits the sizing sweet spot without over-buying. Amp draw peaks around 30A at full throttle, pairing cleanly with one 12V battery. It’s freshwater-only β exactly what electric-only park lakes are.
- 30 lb thrust, 12V, 30″ shaft
- 10-position Lever-Lock composite bracket resists bending, warping, UV damage
- 5 forward / 3 reverse speeds, 6-inch telescoping tiller
- Also available in 45/55 lb versions for heavier loads
Transom mounts for small craft
Transom mounts clamp to the back of a canoe, kayak, or jon boat with no deck cutting. All three sit in the 30-36 lb thrust range for lightly loaded boats, with hand-tiller control suited to small transoms.
Minn Kota Endura C2 30 Freshwater Transom Mounted Trolling Motor (30" Shaft)
- 30 lb thrust, 12V β sized for canoes, kayaks and small jon boats
- 10-position Lever-Lock composite bracket resists bending, warping and UV damage
- 5 forward / 3 reverse speeds with 6-inch telescoping tiller
- 3-1/4″ Power Prop pushes through light vegetation
The Newport Vessels NV-Series steps up to 36 lb thrust on the same 30″ shaft β margin for a heavier boat or windy water. Saltwater-rated but fine in freshwater; the LED battery meter helps check charge mid-trip.
Newport NV-Series 36lb Thrust Trolling Motor 12V β Transom Mount, 30" Shaft
- 36 lb thrust, 12V; saltwater-rated construction also ideal for freshwater lakes
- 8-speed control (5 forward / 3 reverse)
- LED battery meter for real-time charge monitoring
- 2-blade propeller optimized for battery efficiency
Kayak or canoe transoms are usually shallower than a jon boat’s, and a full 30″ shaft can over-insert. Newport’s Kayak Series uses a 24″ fiberglass shaft built for those transoms, plus 5-foot battery cables.
Newport Kayak Series 36lb Thrust Transom Mounted Trolling Motor (24" Shaft)
- 24″ fiberglass shaft sized specifically for kayak and canoe transoms
- 8-speed variable control with 6″ telescoping handle
- Saltwater-rated aluminum motor head with stainless hardware
- Extra-long 5 ft battery cables for flexible battery placement
Step-up bow mounts
Past what a transom motor handles, or for bow-mount steering, both options below jump to 55 lb thrust β roughly 55A at full throttle, so plan battery capacity (runtime math below).
The AQUOS Haswing Cayman B is a budget bow mount rated to ~2,750 lb / 18 ft β headroom for a loaded two-angler jon boat. Wireless remote plus a foot pedal give hands-free control; fresh- and saltwater capable with a sacrificial anode.
AQUOS Haswing Cayman B Bow Mount Trolling Motor β 55 lb Thrust, 48" Shaft, Wireless Remote
- 55 lb thrust, 12V bow mount with wireless remote (~50 m range) plus foot pedal
- Variable-speed control for quieter running and lower current draw
- Rated for boats up to ~2,750 lb / 18 ft
- Fresh- and saltwater capable with sacrificial anode
The Minn Kota Riptide Maxxum is the one motor here built for saltwater duty β grit-blasted, aluminum-coated housing, Weedless Wedge 2 propeller. Overkill for a freshwater-only lake, but right if the boat also launches into brackish or coastal water.
Minn Kota Riptide Maxxum Bow-Mount Trolling Motor β 55 lb Thrust, 42" Shaft, Saltwater
- 55 lb thrust bow mount with tilt/telescoping tiller and built-in battery meter
- Saltwater-grade corrosion protection (grit-blasted, aluminum-coated, powder-coat finish)
- Weedless Wedge 2 propeller; 5 forward / 3 reverse speeds
- Latch & door bracket for secure stow and removal
Electric-only lakes at state parks (and the registration rule most anglers miss)
Electric-only is standard on a meaningful share of state park lakes, and details vary by state in ways that affect what you buy and how you register. Our 50-state directory of electric-only lakes at state parks tracks the rule park by park.
Pennsylvania restricts roughly 35 state park lakes to “electric motors only, slow, no-wake speed” under DCNR rules β Gifford Pinchot, Lackawanna, Raccoon Creek, and Parker Dam all post it. Ohio codifies the same rule (Admin. Code 1501:47-3-17) at parks including Findley and Punderson. Indiana’s Chain O’Lakes State Park differs slightly: its nine lakes are “electric motor only,” but a gas motor may stay mounted if unused.
The bigger surprise: in Pennsylvania and Ohio, attaching any motor β electric included β reclassifies your boat as “powered.” A kayak on a non-powered launch permit needs a powered-boat registration (title plus fee) once a motor goes on, per PA Fish and Boat Commission and Ohio DNR rules (Ohio exempts craft under 14 ft with a motor under 10 HP). Check your state’s rules first.
Battery pairing: what electric-only means for runtime
Electric-only lakes offer no gas backup if the battery runs low, so sizing matters more here. Amp draw β thrust rating at full throttle (30 lb β 30A); runtime = usable capacity Γ· draw. A 100Ah LiFePO4 battery (near-full usable vs. ~50% for lead-acid) runs a 30 lb motor ~3.3 hrs at full throttle, ~6.7-8 hrs at medium (~12-15A, where most anglers fish), ~12-14+ hrs at idle. For the 55 lb bow mounts, that runtime roughly halves. Full tables: our battery guide.
Which one do you need?
Canoe, kayak, or light jon boat on a calm lake: the Endura C2 30. Two-person jon boat or windy water: the 36 lb NV-Series, or the 24″ Kayak Series for a shallow transom. Heavier load or bow steering with remote: the 55 lb Cayman B. Save the Riptide Maxxum for brackish/coastal water.
FAQs
How much thrust do I need for a small lake?
Roughly 2 lb per 100 lb loaded: single kayaks/canoes need 30-36 lb, two-person jon boats 40-55 lb. Wind pushes that higher.
How do I know what shaft length to buy?
Measure the mount point to the waterline, add 20″ (Minn Kota) or 16″ (MotorGuide), round up. Torn between lengths? Buy longer.
Do I need a saltwater motor for freshwater state park lakes?
No. A freshwater-rated model like the Endura is sufficient and cheaper. Saltwater models add anodes and hardware, ~10-20% more.
How long will a battery last?
On a 100Ah LiFePO4 battery, a 30 lb motor at full throttle lasts ~3.3 hours; low-to-medium throttle stretches that to 6-14+ hours.
Does my trolling motor need to be registered if my kayak has no title?
Often, yes. Pennsylvania and Ohio classify any motorized boat as “powered,” requiring a powered-boat registration. Check your state’s agency first.
Are electric-only rules the same at every lake?
No β common but not universal. Check our electric-only lakes directory for the specific lake first.
