Eastern Kentucky — Mountains
Natural Bridge State Resort Park showcases a massive 78-foot sandstone arch accessible by trail or sky lift (operates Apr–Oct). Hemlock Lodge has 35 rooms with private balconies overlooking the gorge, plus 11 cottages (1–2 bedroom, some pet-friendly). Two campgrounds offer 82 sites with hookups + 12 primitive, open mid-March through October. Gateway to the Red River Gorge — world-class rock climbing, hiking, and kayaking. Carter Caves State Resort Park features 20+ caves including Cascade Cave with a 30-foot underground waterfall. Lodge (28 rooms with balconies) plus 11 cottages (some with fireplaces) and 89 campsites including equestrian. Breaks Interstate Park (shared with Virginia) — the “Grand Canyon of the South” — 5-mile-long, 1,600-foot-deep canyon. Cumberland Falls State Resort Park — the “Niagara of the South” — a 125-foot-wide waterfall and one of only a few places in the Western Hemisphere to see a moonbow (lunar rainbow during full moons). Historic DuPont Lodge (51 rooms) plus 25 cabins with fireplaces. ⚠️ 2026 Update: DuPont Lodge closed for renovations (Dec 2025); campgrounds closed entire 2026 season for upgrades — cabins remain open. Are dogs allowed in Kentucky state parks?
Pets are welcome in most outdoor areas of Kentucky state parks but must be leashed in all public areas. The official policy does not state a maximum leash length. Pets are restricted from beaches, nature preserves and some historic sites. Pet-friendly rooms and cabins available at select lodges for a $50-per-accommodation fee, max two pets, 80 lbs per pet. Pets banned from State Nature Preserve trails at parks including John James Audubon, Natural Bridge, Cumberland Falls, Carter Caves and Pine Mountain.
