Not to be confused with Hyner Run State Park which shares the same address, Hyner View State Park is a terrific place to visit in its own right.

Situated on the west rim of the famous Pine Creek Gorge, the park has been labelled the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania.

It is renowned for offering up some of the best scenic views in the whole of the state. Much of which can be taken in while hang gliding – the primary recreational activity the park is known for.

Hiking is also a popular pastime, with the Hyner View Trail offering a challenging and rewarding climb to the top of the mountain. There you can photograph the panoramic vistas of the gorge and surrounding mountains.

Other activities like hunting, picnicking and birding are regularly engaged in at Hyner View State Park, while camping is available at the adjacent Hyner Run.

Even for those who prefer to stay grounded, watching the colorful hang gliders take off and land at Hyner View State Park can be an exciting and unforgettable experience.

Hiking at Hyner View State Park

Hyner View State Park is a paradise for hikers, offering a range of hiking trails that cater to all levels of expertise.

The trails are well-maintained and present stunning views of the surrounding forests, mountains, and valleys. They are best seen via the Hyner View Trail, which is a 4.5-mile hike that takes you through lush forests and rocky outcroppings before culminating at the park’s famous vista.

At the top, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the Susquehanna River and the surrounding countryside.

The trail is challenging but well worth the effort, especially for those into photography, as you can capture some amazing snaps from here.

For those who would prefer something shorter, the Bucktail Trail, is a 1.7-mile loop that takes hikers through a beautiful forested area.

Hunting at Hyner View State Park

Hunting is a popular activity at Hyner View State Park, with the park’s forests and mountains being home to a variety of game, including deer, turkey, rabbits and squirrels.

Those who want to engage in this activity can partake in archery and firearms hunting. There are specially designated areas for each in the park, although you must have a valid Pennsylvania hunting license before you can enter them.

You must also follow all safety guidelines and regulations.

The park also offers special youth hunts to encourage young people to get involved in the sport.

If you do intend to go hunting, you should keep in mind that it can be a dangerous pastime. Therefore you should take precautions, such as wearing bright orange clothing and staying on designated trails, to ensure the safety of you and other people.

Picnicking at Hyner View State Park

With its picturesque vistas, clear blue skies and a gentle breeze blowing in the air, the park is an ideal place for a family picnic.

It offers several picnic areas that provide ample space for families to relax and enjoy a meal together. These areas are equipped with picnic tables, grills, and restroom facilities.

The park also has several locations that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the West Branch Susquehanna River valley, providing an ideal backdrop for a family picnic.

Additionally, the park has a playground where children can play and burn off their energy while the adults can sit back and relax.

Birding at Hyner View State Park

Hyner View State Park is a great destination for birdwatchers looking for a diverse range of avian species in a picturesque setting.

The park’s location provides a unique habitat for many bird species with its forests and meadows being home to ruffed grouse, wild turkey, and bald eagles.

Additionally, the park is located along the migratory route of many species of songbirds, which provide opportunities for birdwatchers to observe these beautiful creatures during their travels.

Pets

Like with Hyner Run State Park, pets are welcome to join you at Hyner View State Park.

You will need to be mindful of the park’s pet policy though should you want to bring your four legged friend with you.

Visitors can bring their dogs to the park to enjoy a day of hiking on the trails or a picnic at one of the many picnic areas. However, pets must be leashed and under control at all times.

Dogs are also not allowed in the park’s buildings or swimming areas and owners are required to clean up after their pets if they have make a mess.

Camping

While there is no camping available at Hyner View State Park there are 35 sites available at the Hyner Run State Park campground.

There you will find a mix of primitive camping options and amenities, which include four walk-in campsites.

Nestled within stately trees that provide privacy and a bit of shade they all come with a picnic table and fire ring.

Additionally, there is a bathhouse that has warm showers.
