Liberty State Park: New York Harbor’s Front Row Seat

Stretching across 1,212 acres along the Jersey City waterfront, Liberty State Park offers what may be the single most iconic urban panorama in America: an unobstructed view of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Manhattan skyline from a green, expansive waterfront park. This is where the ferries to Lady Liberty and Ellis Island depart from the New Jersey side — often with shorter lines and easier parking than the Manhattan departure point.

But Liberty State Park is far more than a ferry terminal. It’s a place of profound historical significance — the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal once received millions of immigrants who had just been processed at Ellis Island. The park also houses the Empty Sky 9/11 Memorial, honoring the 749 people with ties to New Jersey who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. With Liberty Science Center, miles of waterfront promenades, kayaking, and some of the best sunset views on the East Coast, this park draws nearly 25,000 Google reviews.

🗽 Why Visit Liberty State Park? Stand directly across the harbor from the Statue of Liberty, board the ferry to Ellis Island, walk through the historic immigrant terminal, honor 9/11 at the Empty Sky Memorial, explore interactive science exhibits, and jog along two miles of waterfront promenade — all in one day. This is New York Harbor experienced from New Jersey’s front row.

Statue of Liberty Ferry

The New Jersey departure point for Statue City Cruises (the sole authorized ferry operator) is located at the CRRNJ Terminal. Departing from Liberty State Park typically offers shorter lines and easier access than the Battery Park departure in Manhattan. Ferries run every 20-30 minutes.

🎫 Ferry Tip: Book ferry tickets well in advance at statuecruises.com — especially for crown and pedestal access (extremely limited). Departing from the NJ side often means shorter lines. Crown tickets require climbing 393 steps with no elevator. The ferry is included in the ticket price and also stops at Ellis Island.

Empty Sky 9/11 Memorial

New Jersey’s official September 11 memorial consists of two parallel stainless steel walls, each 210 feet long, aligned to face the former World Trade Center site across the harbor. The walls are engraved with the names of the 749 people with ties to New Jersey who were killed. The memorial is open 24/7 and is especially moving at sunset when the Manhattan skyline is silhouetted behind it.
