Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area
Overview
Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area occupies the site of Kona’s original airport on the Big Island of Hawaii, transforming a decommissioned runway and surrounding coastal land into a beloved community recreation space. Located just north of downtown Kailua-Kona, the park’s unique character comes from its aviation heritage — the old runway now serves as an expansive parking area, while the surrounding lava rock shoreline and coral rubble beach provide access to excellent snorkeling and tidepooling along the Kona coast.
The original airport operated from the 1940s until 1970, when operations moved to the current Kona International Airport. The state converted the abandoned airfield into a recreation area that has become a favorite gathering spot for locals, featuring covered picnic pavilions, sports fields, tennis courts, and a playground. The park’s shoreline offers diverse marine environments, from calm keiki (children’s) tide pools to the pristine waters of the adjacent Pawai Bay Marine Life Conservation District.
Recreation
Old Kona Airport offers remarkably diverse recreation. The park features covered picnic pavilions, a playground, tennis courts, and open athletic fields. Along the shoreline, the Keiki Ponds — natural tide pools protected from ocean surge — provide safe, shallow water play for young children. More adventurous visitors can access excellent snorkeling by heading north from the beach toward Pawai Bay, a Marine Life Conservation District known for exceptional water clarity, sea turtles, diverse reef fish, and underwater lava formations including sea arches and small caves. The shore entry is over lava rock and is best suited for experienced snorkelers.
