The Painted Hills — part of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument — display one of the most extraordinary geological color palettes on Earth. The hills’ red, gold, black, and tan bands represent 35 million years of climate history — each color reflecting different mineral compositions deposited under changing conditions. Red layers indicate warm, humid periods; yellow layers indicate drier climates. The surrounding sagebrush steppe supports pronghorn antelope, mule deer, and coyotes. Golden eagles soar over the open landscape. Loggerhead shrikes — “butcher birds” that impale prey on barbed wire and thorns — hunt from fence posts.
