Wildlife & Nature
Elijah Bristow State Park protects 847 acres of Willamette River bottomland — including some of the valley’s finest remaining riparian forest. The park is named for one of the first settlers in Lane County (1846). The Willamette River through this section meanders through a broad floodplain, creating oxbow lakes, sloughs, and gravel bars. These dynamic features provide habitat for western pond turtles — Oregon’s only native freshwater turtle, now listed as sensitive due to habitat loss and competition from invasive red-eared sliders. The park’s old-growth Oregon white oak and black cottonwood forest supports nesting bald eagles. Beaver activity maintains wetland diversity. The park’s 12+ miles of trails are popular with equestrians.

Dexter Reservoir offers nearby water recreation. Fall Creek provides hiking to waterfalls and swimming holes. Eugene — Oregon’s second-largest city — is home to the University of Oregon, Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, and Museum of Natural and Cultural History.
