In 1798, an Irish aristocrat named Harman Blennerhassett built a grand Palladian mansion on a remote island in the Ohio River — the finest private home west of the Alleghenies. It had a ballroom, a laboratory, and a library of thousands of books.

Then Aaron Burr showed up.

In 1805, the sitting Vice President of the United States — already infamous for killing Alexander Hamilton in a duel — arrived on Blennerhassett’s island with a plan so audacious it would be called the most dramatic treason plot in American history: to raise a private army, seize Spanish territory, and carve out a new nation in the western frontier with himself as ruler.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive to the island?

No — the only way to reach Blennerhassett Island is aboard the sternwheeler Island Belle from Point Park in downtown Parkersburg. That’s part of the charm — arriving by riverboat the way Burr himself did.

Is the mansion original?

It’s a faithful reconstruction. The original 1798 mansion burned in 1811. The current mansion was rebuilt on the original foundations using historical records and archaeological evidence.

Was Burr found guilty of treason?

No — he was acquitted in 1807. Chief Justice John Marshall applied a strict interpretation of the constitutional definition of treason (requiring two witnesses to an overt act of war), and Burr walked free. But his reputation was destroyed, and Blennerhassett lost everything.

How big is the island?

About 500 acres — one of the largest islands in the Ohio River. The developed park area with the mansion and trails is a fraction of the total.
