Cayuga Lake’s bottom actually sits 53 feet BELOW sea level — making it one of the lowest points in North America east of the Mississippi! Cornell University and Ithaca College sit at the lake’s southern end, giving the region its famous slogan: “Ithaca is Gorges” (the area has over 150 waterfalls within 10 miles!). The lake is named for the Cayuga Nation of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy.

Seneca Lake is so deep it never freezes completely and maintains a near-constant temperature year-round.
