Catharine Valley Trail is a 12-mile multi-use trail running from Watkins Glen (at the south end of Seneca Lake) south through the Catharine Valley to the town of Horseheads โ the heart of Mark Twain Country. The trail follows a former railroad corridor through some of the most beautiful landscape in the Finger Lakes. The Catharine Valley is named for Catharine Montour โ a mixed French-Algonquin woman who led a village here in the 1700s. Seneca Lake (the largest Finger Lake at 38 miles long and 618 feet deep!) is visible from the trail’s northern sections.

About Catharine Valley
Catharine Valley Trail follows the route of the former Chemung Canal โ New York’s “branch canal” that connected the Finger Lakes to the Erie Canal system in the 1830s. The 12-mile paved trail runs from Watkins Glen to Mark Twain’s summer retreat at Quarry Farm near Elmira. Twain wrote much of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer in a hilltop study overlooking this valley.

Did Mark Twain live in New York?
Mark Twain spent summers at Quarry Farm near Elmira (1870s-1903) โ writing in an octagonal study overlooking the Chemung Valley. He wrote “Huckleberry Finn,” “Tom Sawyer,” “A Connecticut Yankee,” and other masterworks here. Twain is buried in Elmira’s Woodlawn Cemetery. The study has been moved to the Elmira College campus โ visitors can see where America’s greatest humorist worked.
