🏄 Rhode Island’s Best Surf Break — Where New England Learns to Ride Waves — East Matunuck State Beach in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, premier surf beach, Deep Hole and Trestles breaks, swimming, modern eco-pavilion, lifeguards, Block Island views, Atlantic Ocean, family beach with serious waves — Washington County, RI

Deep Hole. Trestles. The Point. These are the names that Rhode Island surfers know — the breaks at East Matunuck that produce the most consistent, rideable waves in the state. When a south swell wraps into Block Island Sound, East Matunuck lights up. And the parking lot fills before sunrise.

But East Matunuck isn’t just a surf beach. It’s also a modern, well-equipped state beach with an eco-friendly pavilion, heated outdoor showers, lifeguards, and a wide sandy shoreline where families spread their blankets. Surfers on one end, sandcastle builders on the other. That’s the deal — and it works.

What to Do

ActivityDetails
SurfingRhode Island’s premier surf beach — Deep Hole, Trestles, and The Point produce consistent beach breaks that handle everything from knee-high summer swells to overhead fall hurricanes. The local surf community is welcoming but knows the lineup. Respect the pecking order. Bring your own board
SwimmingWide sandy beach with lifeguards on duty from 9 AM to 6 PM during beach season. The water is cold (55–65°F) but swimmable from July through September. The gently sloping shoreline is family-friendly away from the surf break. Wade, swim, body surf
Block Island ViewsBlock Island sits 13 miles offshore — visible on clear days as a low profile on the horizon. Watch the Block Island ferries cruise back and forth from the nearby Port of Galilee. The fishing boats heading out at dawn are part of the morning ritual
Pavilion & AmenitiesModern eco-friendly pavilion with restrooms, heated outdoor showers, shade gazebos, snack bar, and gift shop. Wheelchair accessible. The state invested in making this a proper beach facility — clean, modern, and functional
Sunset SessionsThe beach faces south-southwest — summer sunsets light up the water and the sky in gold and pink. Evening surf sessions with sunset behind you and the waves rolling in from Block Island Sound. The best hour of the day
