Nevada’s Preserved One-Room Schoolhouse — Elgin Schoolhouse State Historic Site, 1922 Pioneer School in Rainbow Canyon, Ghost Town of Elgin, Lincoln County, Original Furnishings and Teacher Quarters

Elgin Schoolhouse State Historic Site is a preserved 1922 one-room schoolhouse in the ghost town of Elgin, Rainbow Canyon, Lincoln County, Nevada. Built by local rancher Reuben Bradshaw on land donated by his father James, this schoolhouse served children in grades one through eight from 1922 until 1967 and was designated a Nevada State Historic Site in 2005. Features include original 1920s-era schoolroom furnishings and period artifacts, attached teacher’s quarters added around 1924, setting in scenic Rainbow Canyon near the ghost town of Elgin, restored to original appearance through 1998 private funding, and tours by appointment through Kershaw-Ryan State Park.

Pioneer Education in Rural Nevada

In the early 1900s, families settling along Meadow Valley Wash faced a serious challenge: their children had to travel long distances to schools in Panaca or Caliente. In 1921, James Bradshaw donated seven acres, and his son Reuben built the schoolhouse by 1922. A teacher’s quarters was added around 1924 because no other housing existed in the remote community.

Preservation

After closing in 1967, the building served as a Bradshaw family residence until the 1980s, then sat vacant for nearly two decades. In 1998, private funding restored it to its original appearance, and in 2005 it became a Nevada State Historic Site.

Insider Tips

Pro tip: Lincoln County is larger than Connecticut but has fewer than 5,500 people. Loneliest Road: US Route 50 through Nevada is called “The Loneliest Road in America” — 287 miles between towns.

Frequently Asked Questions

How empty is rural Nevada?

Nevada is the most urbanized state paradoxically — 90% of Nevadans live in Las Vegas or Reno, leaving the other 109,000 square miles nearly empty. Counties like Esmeralda (population 729) and Eureka (population 1,839) have less than 1 person per square mile. The federal government owns 85% of Nevada’s land — more than any other state. The emptiness attracted the Nevada Test Site, Area 51, and other military installations that required vast unpopulated space.
