🍷 Colorado River Canyon Camping at the Gateway to Palisade Wine Country — Swim Lakes, Bighorn Sheep, and De Beque Canyon — A section of James M. Robb Colorado River State Park with year-round camping, two stocked fishing lakes, swim beach, Colorado River access, bighorn sheep and bald eagle viewing, and adjacent Palisade fruit orchards and wineries — near Grand Junction, Mesa County, Colorado

Island Acres is the canyon gem of Colorado River State Park — tucked into De Beque Canyon where red rock walls rise above the Colorado River and two stocked fishing lakes. It’s a year-round campground with a swim beach, great fishing, and the unexpected bonus of being the gateway to Palisade wine country — Colorado’s premier wine region just minutes west.

Watch for bighorn sheep on the canyon walls above camp and bald eagles soaring over the river. The combination of desert canyon scenery, river access, and nearby wineries makes Island Acres unlike any other state park campground in Colorado.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this noisy from I-70?

Honest answer: yes. The campground sits between I-70 and active train tracks. Highway and train noise is noticeable, especially at night. The trade-off is stunning canyon scenery and lake access.

Can I raft the Colorado River here?

Not from Island Acres. A dangerous roller dam downstream makes river launching prohibited here. For Colorado River rafting, use authorized launch points near Grand Junction or Palisade.

How close are the Palisade wineries?

Minutes away. The park is just east of Palisade — Colorado’s wine country along the “Fruit and Wine Byway.” Over 10 wineries, plus peach orchards and farm stands.

Wildlife & Nature

Island Acres sits along the Connecticut River — the most important river corridor in New England for migratory birds. The riverbanks support floodplain forest habitat that floods annually, depositing nutrient-rich sediment. These dynamic habitats support species adapted to disturbance — cottonwood, silver maple, and box elder are fast-growing trees that colonize freshly deposited sandbars. Baltimore orioles weave their distinctive hanging nests from the cottonwood branches. Bank swallows excavate nesting tunnels in exposed riverbank soil — colonies can contain hundreds of pairs. The Connecticut River’s fish passages allow migratory shad and herring to reach upstream spawning grounds — their runs are monitored at fish ladders throughout the system.

Nearby Attractions

Glastonbury-Rocky Hill Ferry (1655) — the oldest continuously operating ferry in America — crosses the Connecticut River nearby. Dinosaur State Park in Rocky Hill preserves 500+ Jurassic-era tracks. Wethersfield has over 100 pre-1850 buildings and the Webb-Deane-Stevens Museum. Hartford’s cultural attractions include the Wadsworth Atheneum (oldest public art museum in the US), Mark Twain House, and Bushnell Park Carousel. Great River Park in Hartford and East Hartford provides riverside walking and cycling trails.
