World-Class Birding at the Crossroads of Two Flyways

Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park in Mission, Texas, serves as the headquarters for the World Birding Center and stands as one of the most important birding destinations in North America. Situated at the convergence of the Central and Mississippi flyways, with subtropical habitats found nowhere else in the United States, this park attracts dedicated birders from around the globe seeking species that can’t be found anywhere else north of Mexico.

To protect its delicate ecosystems, Bentsen is a vehicle-free park — visitors explore by foot, bicycle, or a free tram service that runs throughout the park. This creates an unusually peaceful atmosphere where wildlife is remarkably approachable and the natural soundscape remains undisturbed.

Birding

With over 360 recorded bird species — more than 20 found nowhere else in the country — Bentsen is the crown jewel of Rio Grande Valley birding. Peak season runs from November through April, when winter residents and migrants swell the population.

Signature Species

  • Green Jay: The RGV’s most iconic bird with iridescent green, blue, and yellow plumage
  • Plain Chachalaca: A large, vocal gamebird found only in southernmost Texas
  • Altamira Oriole: Brilliant orange oriole with a distinctive pendulous nest
  • Great Kiskadee: Bold yellow-bellied flycatcher with a loud call
  • Groove-billed Ani: Unusual all-black cuckoo-relative with a distinctive bill
  • Swainson’s & Broad-winged Hawks: Massive raptor kettles during migration

The two-story, wheelchair-accessible Hawk Observation Tower provides panoramic views for raptor watching. Multiple water features, feeding stations, and covered viewing blinds are strategically placed throughout the park for close observation.

Butterfly Watching

The park hosts over 250 butterfly species, with October and November being the prime viewing months. Dedicated butterfly gardens near the visitor center and Nature Center attract rare species including the Blue-eyed Sailor, Ornythion Swallowtail, and several rare hairstreaks. The adjacent National Butterfly Center offers even more opportunities.
