๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ† Finger Lake Launch โ€” State marine park on Canadarago Lake โ€” access point to one of the lesser-known Finger Lakes in central New York

Canadarago State Marine Park provides public boat launch access to Canadarago Lake โ€” sometimes called the “forgotten Finger Lake” because it sits just outside the official 11-lake Finger Lakes region. The Finger Lakes were carved by massive glaciers during the Ice Age โ€” mile-thick ice sheets scoured deep, parallel valleys into the Appalachian Plateau. Canadarago Lake is 3.5 miles long and up to 95 feet deep โ€” formed by the same glacial processes but oriented differently than the main Finger Lakes. The lake is known for excellent walleye and bass fishing.

About Canadarago

Canadarago State Marine Park on Canadarago Lake in Otsego County provides boating access to one of the Finger Lakes region’s lesser-known gems. Canadarago Lake โ€” 3 miles long and spring-fed โ€” sits just north of Cooperstown, where Abner Doubleday allegedly invented baseball (he didn’t, but the myth persists). The lake’s clean, cold water supports walleye, lake trout, and smallmouth bass in one of central New York’s most productive fisheries.

Things to Do

Boating and kayaking, fishing for walleye and lake trout, swimming, picnicking, and visiting nearby Cooperstown’s Baseball Hall of Fame and Glimmerglass Opera.

Insider Tips

Otsego region: Canadarago Lake sits near Cooperstown โ€” home of the Baseball Hall of Fame and James Fenimore Cooper’s “Leatherstocking Tales.” Pro tip: Cooper’s novels (“Last of the Mohicans”) were set in this landscape โ€” Otsego Lake was his “Glimmerglass.” Brewery Trail: The Cooperstown area has become a craft beer destination alongside its baseball fame.

Best Time to Visit

Summer: Lake recreation and baseball pilgrimage. Fall: Foliage and harvest. Spring: Fishing season. Winter: Quiet lakeside.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown?

Cooperstown was chosen based on the myth that Abner Doubleday invented baseball there in 1839 โ€” historians have thoroughly debunked this story, but the Hall of Fame opened there in 1939 and became iconic. The rural village setting gives the Hall a nostalgic charm that a big-city location couldn’t match. Three million+ visitors have made the pilgrimage โ€” it’s baseball’s most sacred site.
