340 Acres of Desert Sand Dunes — Free and Open Year-Round

Heber Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area is one of California’s most accessible off-road playgrounds — 340 acres of open sand dunes in the Imperial Valley, just minutes from the Mexican border. Unlike the massive Glamis/Imperial Sand Dunes that attract thousands of hardcore riders, Heber Dunes offers a more intimate, family-friendly OHV experience with no entry fee and year-round access.

The dunes sit in the heart of one of America’s hottest regions — summer temperatures regularly exceed 110°F — creating a landscape that feels genuinely otherworldly. The rolling sand formations, surrounded by flat agricultural land and distant mountain ranges, provide a surreal backdrop for off-highway vehicle recreation.

Off-Road Riding for All Skill Levels

What makes Heber Dunes special compared to larger OHV areas is its manageable scale. The 340-acre footprint is large enough for a full day of riding but compact enough that families can keep track of each other. The dune formations range from gentle slopes ideal for beginners and children to steeper faces that challenge experienced riders.

All types of off-highway vehicles are welcome:

  • ATVs and UTVs — the most popular choice for families
  • Dirt bikes — excellent for navigating the dune ridges
  • Sand rails and dune buggies — for the full desert experience
  • 4×4 trucks — with proper tires and reduced pressure

California OHV registration or a non-resident OHV permit is required for all vehicles. Helmets are mandatory for all riders under 18.

Camping Under Desert Stars

The recreation area offers primitive camping directly on the dunes — no hookups, no designated sites, just open desert. The lack of light pollution in this remote corner of the Imperial Valley creates extraordinary stargazing conditions. During winter months (the peak season), nighttime temperatures drop to comfortable levels while daytime highs remain pleasant in the 70s and 80s.

Facilities are minimal but functional: vault toilets are available, but there is no water or shade at the site. Visitors must bring all water, fuel, and supplies.

Best Season to Visit

The peak season runs from October through April, when temperatures are manageable. Summer riding is possible but requires extreme heat precautions — early morning sessions before 9 AM are strongly recommended. The area is particularly popular during winter weekends and holidays when Southern California riders escape to the desert.

Heber Dunes is located along Highway 98 near the community of Heber, approximately 10 miles east of El Centro and just 5 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border at Calexico.
