Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park
🌹 Nine Gardens, One Mansion, and the Gilded Age Woman Who Built Them as a Memorial to Love — Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park in Canandaigua, New York, 50-acre Victorian estate, 40-room Queen Anne mansion (1887), nine world-themed formal gardens (1902–1919), Lord & Burnham conservatory complex, Mary Clark Thompson memorial, Finger Lakes wine country, Italian/Japanese/Rose/Sub Rosa gardens — Ontario County, NY
When New York banker Frederick Ferris Thompson died in 1899, his wife Mary didn’t sell their summer estate in Canandaigua. Instead, over the next two decades, she transformed it into nine of the most extraordinary formal gardens ever created in America — each one a memorial to the life they had shared together.
An Italian garden inspired by their travels to Rome. A Japanese garden with a tea house and a Buddha. A Rose garden with 2,500 bushes. A Sub Rosa garden with no flowers at all — only white marble gods in green darkness. The 40-room Queen Anne mansion, already spectacular, became merely the center of a 50-acre living artwork.
The Nine Gardens
| Garden | Details |
|---|---|
| Italian Garden | The first garden, created 1903. Sunken parterres in a fleur-de-lis pattern. Elaborate “carpet bedding” with thousands of annual flowers changed seasonally |
| Rose Garden | Over 2,500 rose bushes in symmetrical beds. Columned belvedere at the center. Observation tower with panoramic views |
| Japanese Garden | Miniature mountainous landscape with a tea house and a statue of Buddha. Designed to evoke an entire Japanese landscape in a small space |
| Sub Rosa Garden | The “secret garden” — no flowers, only evergreens, boxwood hedges, and white marble statues of Zeus, Artemis, and Apollo in shadowed green |
| Old-Fashioned Garden | Grandmother’s garden with heirloom perennials and cottage flowers. A deliberate contrast to the formal designs |
| Pansy Garden | Thousands of pansies in geometric beds — a flower that symbolized remembrance in Victorian language |
| Rock Garden | Alpine and rock-dwelling plants set among boulders and stone pathways |
| Blue & White Garden | Only blue and white flowers — a color scheme garden, avant-garde for its era |
| Kitchen Garden | Functional kitchen and herb garden supplying the mansion’s kitchen |

A Lord & Burnham greenhouse complex built 1903–1915 — one of the most important residential greenhouse collections in America. Includes a domed Palm House, orchid rooms, and tropical plant collections. The conservatory is open during the garden season.

Yes — the Finger Lakes Wine Center is located on the grounds. The Finger Lakes region is one of America’s premier wine-producing areas, known for Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and ice wines. Tastings are available during park hours.
