Can Your Kid Use a Metal Detector in a State Park? Usually Not β Here’s the Real Map
On US public land the default is that detecting is prohibited unless the managing agency explicitly allows it β and most state park systems ban it, require a permit, or confine it to designated areas. - Texas β banned. Operating a detector in a state park is an offense except by permit, and permits are effectively issued only to recover a specific lost personal item with the superintendent’s approval.
- Minnesota β banned. Rules 6100.0900: detectors only for locating identified lost property, with prior written permission, under park manager supervision.
- New York β permit system. NYS Parks issues regional metal detecting permits (Long Island’s is sold via ReserveAmerica). Get your region’s permit first.
- Ohio β friendliest. OAC 1501:46-7-08 allows detecting without permission on sand beaches and most mowed areas (golf course, rental-facility, and campground mowed areas excepted); elsewhere needs the area manager’s written OK, and dug ground must be restored.
- Michigan β designated areas. Allowed in many parks but only in zones shown on each park’s map, never at historic/archaeological sites; finds are reviewed by park staff, who can retain them. Only a handful of parks allow it park-wide.
- Florida β coastal strip only. Prohibited except at coastal parks, between the toe of the dune and the high-water line; nothing submerged. Anything over 50 years old legally belongs to the Florida Division of Historical Resources β your kid can’t keep it.
- Pennsylvania β comparatively permissive. Many parks allow detecting sunriseβsunset, no fee. Swim beaches only in the off-season (Tuesday after Labor Day to the Saturday before Memorial Day), and in turf only narrow probes like a screwdriver β no shovels or trowels.
Federal law is stricter. Under ARPA, digging or removing archaeological resources (100+ years old) on federal or protected land without a permit carries fines up to $20,000 β and the equipment used, detector included, can be confiscated. National parks ban detecting entirely.
Where kids CAN detect: private land with the owner’s permission (written is safest), many town and county beaches and parks under local ordinance, and the designated state-park areas above.
