How state park fees work
A park visit can combine several charges. The calculator keeps them separate so an annual pass is compared only with the admission it may replace.
- Vehicle entry
- A day-use charge for each vehicle entering the park—the most common fee unit.
- Per-person admission
- Some systems charge each adult or visitor instead of each vehicle.
- Campsite price
- The nightly site rate from your reservation. Annual passes normally do not replace it.
- Reservation fee
- A booking or transaction charge that can sit on top of the campsite price.
- Nonresident surcharge
- Some states publish a higher day-use or pass price for out-of-state visitors. The tool uses it only when our verified state row documents it.
Why the answer is sometimes a range
State park systems rarely use one universal gate price. A beachfront park on a summer weekend can cost more than an inland park in winter, and some states charge different rates for residents, out-of-state vehicles, adults, or special recreation areas. When an agency publishes a range, the calculator keeps that range visible instead of inventing a national average.

Data and methodology
The default values come from our 2026 State Park Fees Study: more than 2,500 park-level fee records normalized by state, followed by a state-by-state check against official park agencies in July 2026. The calculator reads the same downloadable dataset used by the study, so the table and tool do not drift into separate price lists.

Are state parks free?
Some state park systems offer free general day use, while others charge by vehicle or person. Even in a free-entry system, campsites, reservations, tours, activities, and special recreation areas can have separate charges.
Does an annual pass include camping?
Usually not. Most passes cover day-use admission or vehicle parking. Campsites, cabins, reservation fees, activities, and partner-operated locations normally remain separate.
Does one annual pass cover everyone in the vehicle?
Coverage varies by state. Some passes follow a vehicle, some belong to a named passholder, and others limit accompanying visitors. Check the linked agency’s eligibility and vehicle rules before buying.
Why does the calculator ask for paying visitors or vehicles?
States use different fee units. Most charge by vehicle, while several charge each adult or visitor. The label changes automatically after you select a state.
Are out-of-state rates included?
Yes when the verified state data gives a separate visitor rate. When it does not, the calculator clearly marks the resident or base range and asks you to confirm a possible surcharge with the agency.
Can I include senior, veteran, or disability discounts?
Yes. Discount eligibility and amounts vary by state and often require an agency-issued permit or proof of status. Enter the reduced amount under Adjust exact admission and pass rates after checking the official program.
Are reservation fees included automatically?
No. Reservation and transaction fees vary by booking channel and stay, so enter the total shown at checkout under Add camping and other costs.
What if camping includes park admission?
Set the day-use minimum and maximum to $0 in the adjustment panel. Some states or parks waive admission for registered campers, but this is not a universal rule.
