On the far western edge of New York State — closer to Cleveland than to Albany — Lake Erie’s shoreline opens into a sandy beach that most New Yorkers have never heard of. Amsterdam Beach State Park is one of the state’s westernmost parks, a quiet stretch of Lake Erie waterfront where the sunsets rival anything on the ocean.

This is Great Lakes swimming at its simplest: a sandy beach, clear water, and a horizon that goes on forever. No boardwalk. No crowds. Just the lake, the sky, and the knowledge that you’re standing on the edge of an inland sea that holds 20% of the world’s fresh surface water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lake Erie safe to swim in?

Yes — Lake Erie’s water quality has improved dramatically since the 1970s. The Clean Water Act and decades of environmental restoration have made Erie’s beaches some of the cleanest Great Lakes beaches. Check local water quality advisories during peak summer if algae blooms are a concern.

Why is this beach so uncrowded?

Geography. Western New York is far from the state’s population centers. Most New Yorkers don’t realize their state has Great Lakes beaches. Amsterdam Beach benefits from this obscurity — you’ll often have the beach nearly to yourself.

What else is nearby?

Chautauqua County is wine country. The Lake Erie Wine Trail runs through the area with over 20 wineries. Barcelona Lighthouse (the world’s first natural gas lighthouse) is nearby. Chautauqua Institution — the famous summer arts and education center — is just south.

🏖️ An Inland Ocean You’ve Never Heard Of

20% of the world’s fresh surface water. Sunsets over a horizon that goes on forever. A sandy beach in New York that’s closer to Cleveland than Albany. This is Lake Erie.
