About Battle of Athens

Battle of Athens State Historic Site in Clark County preserves the site of the northernmost Civil War battle west of the Mississippi โ€” fought August 5, 1861, when Colonel David Moore’s 500 pro-Union Home Guards defeated a Confederate force attempting to cross the Des Moines River into Iowa. Missouri was the most bitterly divided border state, with citizens literally fighting neighbor against neighbor. The battle saved Iowa from Confederate invasion.

Walking the interpreted battlefield, viewing the restored Benning House (used as a hospital during the battle), attending annual reenactments, and learning about Missouri’s brutal Civil War border conflict.

Visiting Today

The 300-acre park preserves the 1861 battlefield with interpretive trail markers along the Des Moines River bluffs. The restored Benning House, used as a field hospital during the battle, is open for tours. Annual reenactments bring the border conflict to life each August. Fishing and hiking available along the river.

Getting There

Located on Highway CC north of Revere in Clark County, at the Iowa border. The park is open year-round with picnic facilities. Combine with a visit to nearby Mark Twain’s Hannibal (60 miles south). The Des Moines River crossing here was one of the northernmost Civil War engagements west of the Mississippi.
