๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ† Pocosin Wilderness โ€” Ancient pocosin bog ecosystem โ€” the “swamp on a hill” that once covered 2.5 million acres of coastal North Carolina

Bay Tree State Natural Area protects a remnant of the vast pocosin ecosystem โ€” an evergreen shrub bog unique to the southeastern US. “Pocosin” comes from the Algonquian word meaning “swamp on a hill” โ€” these elevated bogs sit above the surrounding floodplain on deep layers of peat accumulated over thousands of years. North Carolina once had 2.5 million acres of pocosin; fewer than 700,000 acres remain after centuries of logging, drainage, and conversion to farmland. Bay Tree’s pocosin supports rare carnivorous plants including sundews and bladderworts.

About Bay Tree

Bay Tree State Natural Area in Bladen County protects a bay forest โ€” a distinctive coastal plain ecosystem dominated by loblolly bay, sweet bay magnolia, and red bay trees. These evergreen bay forests grow in saturated organic soils and support carnivorous plants including sundews and Venus flytraps. North Carolina’s coastal plain holds the world’s only native population of Venus flytraps โ€” found within a 75-mile radius of Wilmington.

Things to Do

Observing rare carnivorous plants (sundews, pitcher plants), birdwatching in the bay forest, nature photography, and exploring one of North Carolina’s most ecologically distinctive habitats.

Insider Tips

Coastal wetland: Bay Tree preserves a rare pocosin wetland โ€” dense evergreen shrub bogs unique to the North Carolina Coastal Plain. Venus flytrap: North Carolina is the only place on Earth where Venus flytraps grow naturally โ€” within a 75-mile radius of Wilmington.

Best Time to Visit

Spring: Carnivorous plants active. Summer: Full wetland ecology. Fall: Bay tree foliage. Winter: Evergreen pocosin landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do Venus flytraps grow wild?

Venus flytraps (Dionaea muscipula) grow naturally only within a 75-mile radius of Wilmington, NC โ€” nowhere else on Earth. They thrive in nutrient-poor, acidic bogs where trapping insects provides essential nitrogen. Poaching is a serious threat โ€” stealing wild Venus flytraps is now a felony in North Carolina. The plant has fascinated scientists since Darwin called it “the most wonderful plant in the world.”
