Carvers Creek is two parks under one name in the Sandhills north of Fayetteville. The Long Valley Farm Access is the main entrance and the historic heart: a 1,420-acre farm bought in 1937 by James Stillman Rockefeller — 1924 Olympic rowing gold medalist, husband of Nancy Carnegie — whose 1938 house, listed on the National Register, is being renovated in phases toward a future education center. Two short loops (Rockefeller, 2 miles; Cypress Point, 0.75 miles) circle the millpond, where you can fish with a North Carolina license; there is no boat launch and swimming is not among the park’s listed activities.
The Sandhills Access, ten miles north of Fayetteville, is the ecological reason the park exists: longleaf pine and wiregrass, an ecosystem of which only about 3 percent survives, kept alive by prescribed fire. Seven trails here — including the 4-mile Longleaf Pine Trail, the 1.5-mile RCW Loop and the Turkey Oak and Fox Squirrel loops — are open to hiking, biking and horseback riding. The RCW is the red-cockaded woodpecker, a threatened bird down to about 1 percent of its original population, which nests here April through June alongside seven other woodpecker species, blue grosbeaks and warblers.
Best Time to Visit
Spring is woodpecker nesting season and the longleaf understory’s flowering time; fall brings the mildest riding and hiking weather on the sandy Sandhills trails. Prescribed burns are part of the calendar — the park closes individual trails on burn days, so check the general-information page before a visit. Hours run seasonally from 8 a.m., closing at 6 p.m. in winter and as late as 9 p.m. in June through August; the park closes only on Christmas Day.
Visitor Tips
There are no fees for day use. And the honest answer to the most common question: Carvers Creek has no camping — neither access permits it, as of September 2026. The nearest state-park campground is at Raven Rock State Park, about 30 minutes’ drive. Picnic tables are free and first come, including an accessible table with a grill near the park office and the Rockefeller garage, which doubles as a rain shelter. Dogs are welcome on a 6-foot leash.
Long Valley Farm Access: 2505 Long Valley Road, Spring Lake, about 13 miles northwest of Fayetteville; Sandhills Access: 995 McCloskey Road, Fayetteville. The park office is at Long Valley Farm (910-436-4681), which also runs a Tuesday shuttle for visitors with limited mobility. For a second dose of the same ecosystem, Weymouth Woods-Sandhills Nature Preserve lies further west in the Sandhills.
