Frequently Asked Questions
Why is longleaf pine important?
Longleaf pine ecosystems once covered 90 million acres โ the dominant landscape of the Southeast. Fire-dependent and incredibly biodiverse (pitcher plants, orchids, wiregrass), longleaf forests rivaled tropical rainforests in plant diversity. Logging, fire suppression, and development reduced them to 3% of original extent. Restoration efforts are underway but the scale of loss is staggering โ longleaf pine is one of America’s most endangered ecosystems.
