Bluewater Lake State Park is a state park on Bluewater Lake in the Zuni Mountains, approximately 28 miles west of Grants, Cibola County, western New Mexico, managed by New Mexico State Parks Division. The park features 149 developed campsites including sites with electric hookups, fishing for rainbow trout, tiger muskie, and channel catfish in a stocked high-desert reservoir, year-round recreation including popular winter ice fishing on the frozen lake, boating and water sports at 7,400 feet elevation surrounded by Zuni Mountain scenery, beach camping and boat-in camping options for more adventurous visitors, scenic views of red sandstone cliffs contrasting with ponderosa pine and piñon-juniper forest, restrooms with showers and RV dump station, and an uncrowded alternative to New Mexico’s more heavily visited state parks along the Rio Grande.

The tiger muskie fishing is what draws serious anglers — these aggressive, toothy predators are stocked by New Mexico Game and Fish and can reach impressive sizes in the cold, deep water. Bluewater Lake is one of the best tiger muskie fisheries in the Southwest.

The winter transformation is dramatic — when the lake freezes at 7,400 feet, Bluewater becomes a premier ice fishing destination. The quiet, snow-covered landscape surrounded by ponderosa pines creates a high-country winter experience rarely associated with New Mexico.
