🏔️ A Peninsula on the Largest Natural Freshwater Lake West of the Mississippi — Finley Point State Park on Flathead Lake, Montana, lakefront camping, cherry orchards, swimming, boat launch, Mission Mountains views, Flathead Lake peninsula, fishing for lake trout and whitefish — Lake County, MT

Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi — 197 square miles of crystal-clear water ringed by mountains. Finley Point sticks out into the southern end of the lake like a finger pointing at the Mission Mountains, and the state park at the tip puts your campsite on the shoreline of one of America’s great lakes.

This is Montana lake camping at its finest. Cherry orchards line the road to the park — Flathead Lake cherries are famous, and July brings the harvest. The water is impossibly clear. The Mission Mountains rise from the eastern shore like a wall of snow and rock. And your campsite is under ponderosa pines, steps from the water, with a view that belongs on a postcard nobody would believe.

What to Do

ActivityDetails
CampingLakefront campsites under ponderosa pines — some with direct views across Flathead Lake to the Mission Mountains. Tent and RV sites. Vault toilets. No hookups. The sites are shaded, private, and the lake is your front yard. Reserve early for summer weekends
SwimmingThe lake water is clean and clear — visibility to 30+ feet in midsummer. The swimming area has a gentle, rocky bottom. Water temperature reaches the mid-60s°F in August. Cold for Arizona transplants. Perfect for Montanans who grew up in it
BoatingBoat launch with access to all 197 square miles of Flathead Lake. Sailboats, powerboats, kayaks, and canoes. The lake is big enough to have weather — check wind conditions. The southern end near Finley Point is generally calmer than the open north
FishingFlathead Lake produces lake trout (mackinaw), whitefish, yellow perch, and bull trout. The lake trout fishery is legendary — troll deep for fish that can exceed 30 pounds. A Montana fishing license and Flathead Reservation permit (for waters within the reservation) are required
Cherry SeasonJuly — the Flathead Lake cherry harvest. The orchards on Finley Point and around the lake produce some of the best cherries in America. Roadside stands sell Rainier, Bing, and Lambert cherries by the bag. Buy a bag. Sit at the lake. Spit pits into the water

The Flathead Lake Setting

FeatureDetails
Mission MountainsRising directly east of the lake — a wall of peaks reaching 10,000 feet with glaciers, alpine lakes, and grizzly bears. The Mission Mountain Tribal Wilderness is one of the first tribally designated wilderness areas in America. The view from Finley Point is one of Montana’s finest
Water ClarityFlathead Lake is one of the cleanest large lakes in the world — visibility can exceed 30 feet. The clarity is due to low nutrient input and the lake’s depth (370 feet at the deepest). You can see the bottom from your boat in 20 feet of water
Flathead ReservationFinley Point is on the Flathead Indian Reservation — home to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. The reservation manages the southern half of the lake. Cultural respect and proper permits are important
Near PolsonThe town of Polson sits at the south end of Flathead Lake — restaurants, grocery stores, and the Miracle of America Museum. The drive from Finley Point to Polson is 15 minutes through cherry orchards
