Harry “Babe” Woodyard State Natural Area covers 1,200 acres of restored tallgrass prairie and wetlands in Edgar County โ€” honoring Harry “Babe” Woodyard, a beloved Illinois state legislator and conservation champion who served from 1979 until his death in 2002. Illinois once contained 22 million acres of tallgrass prairie โ€” the largest prairie in the world. Less than 0.01% survives today, making every restored acre precious. Woodyard’s site demonstrates what the Illinois prairie looked like before European settlement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the prairie-forest edge ecologically important?

Edge habitats where two ecosystems meet support species from both โ€” plus edge specialists found nowhere else. Before European settlement, the prairie-forest border shifted with fire frequency. Without fire, trees invade prairie. With frequent fire, prairie expands into forest. This dynamic boundary created Illinois’s characteristic mosaic landscape.
