🏆🏆🏆🏆 North Shore Canyon — Dramatic slot canyon and waterfalls on the Kadunce River — one of the North Shore’s most thrilling hikes

Kadunce River State Wayside features one of Minnesota’s most dramatic geological experiences — a narrow slot canyon carved through volcanic basalt where the Kadunce River plunges toward Lake Superior. Adventurous hikers can walk directly in the river through the canyon (knee-deep in summer), surrounded by towering basalt walls draped in moss and ferns. Multiple waterfalls cascade through the gorge. This is not a developed trail — it’s a genuine wilderness canyon walk that rewards the adventurous with an experience unique on the North Shore.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need water shoes?

Essential — you’ll be walking in the river. Bring water shoes or old sneakers, and be prepared to get wet to the knees. Visit in summer when water is low. Never enter during high water or rain.

Is the slot canyon safe?

The slot canyon is only safe during low-water conditions — typically late summer and early fall. Never enter during rain, snowmelt, or high water. The narrow walls would trap anyone caught in rising water. Check weather forecasts carefully. When conditions are right, walking through the narrow basalt canyon with sunlight filtering from above is magical.
