Does your phone already do this?
An iPhone 14 or newer already has a version of this built in. Emergency SOS via satellite has been free for two years after activation since launch, and Apple has extended that window twice — once for iPhone 14 owners who activated before November 15, 2023, and again in September 2025 for iPhone 14/15 models. The Motorola Defy Satellite Link is a different category: a Bluetooth accessory, not a standalone communicator, as Motorola’s own listing describes it. It only works alongside a compatible iOS 14+/Android 10+ phone — a reasonable low-commitment add-on if you already own the right phone, but the wrong pick if your phone is what’s likely to die, get wet, or get left in the car.

Who actually answers when you hit SOS
Pressing SOS doesn’t connect you to 911 directly — it routes to a monitoring center that coordinates with local search-and-rescue. On Garmin devices that’s Garmin Response (formerly IERCC/GEOS), a 24/7 operation in Montgomery, Texas that has coordinated more than 83,000 emergency incidents worldwide since 2007, including over 5,000 SOS activations. ZOLEO’s alerts go to GEOS, the same underlying service. ACR Bivy Stick routes to Global Rescue’s 24/7 center via the app or the device’s button. In every case, a trained coordinator is on the other end, not an automated system.
Satellite communicator or PLB — what’s the difference?
A personal locator beacon (PLB), like ACR’s ResQLink line, is one-way only: press the button and it sends a GPS distress signal, no subscription and no way to send or receive a message back. A two-way communicator — inReach, ZOLEO, Bivy Stick — lets you message back and forth, so rescuers or family can confirm help is coming or ask follow-up questions. Want just a distress beacon? Cell dead zones at state parks are real — and some parks say so outright
This isn’t a marketing claim. Pennsylvania’s DCNR posts a standing disclosure on its own park pages, including Ricketts Glen State Park‘s listing: “Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania State Parks. Please download the park map before your visit.” It reads as a standard notice DCNR applies broadly, not a one-off warning. DCNR’s own trail brochures go further for specific tracts — the Flat Rock Trail System brochure states “cell phone coverage is limited throughout the forest, and you should not rely on your phone to be a map, GPS, light source, or emergency contact,” and Michaux State Forest materials note “cell phone service is limited throughout the forest.” Anywhere in Pennsylvania’s state park system, treat “no signal” as the expectation.
Ohio and Michigan carry no equivalent official disclosure, so we’re framing these two honestly as visitor reports, not agency statements. At Tar Hollow State Park in Ohio, visitor accounts describe cell service disappearing completely, even for Verizon, with LTE returning only after roughly a 10-minute drive out — ODNR’s own page doesn’t state this. Same caveat at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in Michigan: the DNR’s page doesn’t state a gap outright, but consistent visitor reporting describes no service across most of the park’s 60,000-acre backcountry, with bars only from high ridgelines. Worth checking before a broader Ohio or Michigan trip.
The National Park Service, facing the same terrain problem, states the principle bluntly on its Hike Smart page: “Do not rely on your cell phone because there may not be cellular coverage and reception in your park,” and recommends visitors “consider having a personal locator beacon, should you need to call for help” — federal guidance pointing hikers toward exactly this category of device.
