🚲 Florida’s #1 Mountain Biking Destination – Updated 2025

IMBA Epic in the Sunshine State

Most people don’t associate Florida with mountain biking. Santos Trailhead will change that. Located in Ocala along the Cross Florida Greenway, Santos is home to 80+ miles of world-class single-track trails—and holds the prestigious IMBA Epic Ride designation.

Built within an old limestone quarry (the “Vortex”), maintained by the dedicated Ocala Mountain Bike Association (OMBA), and recognized as an IMBA Bronze Ride Center, Santos is the premier mountain biking destination in the southeastern United States.

Trail System

Santos offers trails for every skill level, from flat beginner loops to expert-only freeride features.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a mountain bike?

For the beginner loops, a hardtail or even a gravel bike works. For The Vortex and advanced trails, a full-suspension mountain bike is strongly recommended.

Is it really that good for flat Florida?

Yes. The old quarry provides surprising elevation changes, and the trail-building is world-class. Riders travel from across the Southeast specifically for Santos.

Can I hike or run on the trails?

Hiking is allowed on some trails, but the majority are designed for mountain biking. Check signage at each trailhead for permitted uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to enter a Florida state park?

Most Florida state parks charge $4 to $6 per vehicle (up to 8 occupants). An individual annual pass costs $60, and a family annual pass costs $120, covering unlimited visits to all state parks.

Can I swim with manatees at Florida state parks?

While you cannot swim with manatees (they are protected), several spring parks like Blue Spring State Park offer excellent viewing from boardwalks. Manatees gather in springs from November through March when river temperatures drop.

Are alligators dangerous in Florida state parks?

Alligators are present in virtually all freshwater bodies in Florida. They are generally not aggressive toward humans, but you should never approach, feed, or harass them. Keep children and pets at a safe distance from water edges.

What is the best time to visit Florida state parks?

Winter and spring (November through April) offer the best conditions: pleasant temperatures, low humidity, fewer mosquitoes, and peak manatee viewing. Summer brings extreme heat, humidity, and daily thunderstorms.
