๐Ÿž๏ธ 160,000 Acres of Wilderness Surrounding the “Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania” โ€” Home to Pine Creek Gorge, a 62-mile rail trail, the 30-mile West Rim Trail, and some of the best backcountry camping in the eastern United States โ€” Tioga & Lycoming Counties, Pennsylvania

Tioga State Forest encompasses 160,000 acres of northern Pennsylvania wilderness and is the gateway to Pine Creek Gorge โ€” the “Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania.” This 47-mile-long, 1,450-foot-deep gorge carved by Pine Creek is the most dramatic geological feature in the eastern US outside of the Appalachian gorges of West Virginia. Two state parks โ€” Leonard Harrison (east rim) and Colton Point (west rim) โ€” provide developed overlooks, while the state forest itself offers vast backcountry for camping, hunting, and solitude.

The forest is crossed by the 62-mile Pine Creek Rail Trail (crushed limestone, mostly flat) running along the gorge floor, and the 30-mile West Rim Trail โ€” one of Pennsylvania’s premier backpacking routes along the canyon’s edge. With dispersed primitive camping permitted throughout most of the forest, this is a landscape for those who want to go deep.
