About Vosburg Neck
Vosburg Neck State Park in Wyoming County preserves a dramatic 600-acre peninsula formed by a horseshoe bend in the Susquehanna River โ one of the most striking meander features in the eastern United States. The “neck” is surrounded on three sides by the North Branch of the Susquehanna. The area was shaped by glacial meltwater floods at the end of the last Ice Age, when catastrophic outbursts from glacial Lake Great Bend carved the meander.
Things to Do
Hiking the peninsula trails with river views on three sides, fishing, kayaking around the meander, birdwatching (the peninsula is a natural funnel for migrating raptors), and studying one of the most dramatic river meanders in the Appalachians.
Getting There
Located near Mehoopany in Wyoming County โ in the Endless Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania. The park encompasses a dramatic peninsula formed by a deep horseshoe bend in the Susquehanna River. The Endless Mountains โ a local name for the dissected Allegheny Plateau โ feature deep forested valleys and panoramic ridge-top views. Sullivan County (adjacent) is the least populated county in Pennsylvania.
History & Ecology
The Endless Mountains got their name from pioneers who described the seemingly infinite ridges they had to cross. Vosburg Neck’s horseshoe bend creates a peninsula nearly surrounded by water โ accessible only via a narrow land bridge. The Susquehanna’s dramatic meanders here carved through 400-million-year-old Devonian shale and sandstone, exposing fossil beds from an ancient tropical sea.
Insider Tips
Susquehanna oxbow: Vosburg Neck is a dramatic peninsula formed by a tight horseshoe bend in the Susquehanna River โ nearly cut off as an island. Pro tip: The neck is one of the most dramatic river meanders in the eastern US โ visible on satellite imagery. Meander mechanics: The Susquehanna’s meanders are “entrenched” โ the river cut down through rising mountains while maintaining its winding course.
Best Time to Visit
Fall: River views with foliage. Summer: River fishing and kayaking. Spring: High water accentuates the meander. Winter: Eagle watching.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an entrenched meander?
Most meanders form in flat terrain โ rivers wander across floodplains. Entrenched meanders are different โ the river established its winding course on a flat surface, then cut downward as the land rose around it. The result is a winding river in a deep valley โ seemingly impossible geography. The Susquehanna’s entrenched meanders are textbook examples studied in geology courses worldwide.
