New Jersey’s Pine Barrens Wilderness — 617-Acre Undeveloped Recreation Area, Dwarf Pine Plains “Pygmy Forest”, Rare Broom Crowberry Habitat, Hiking, Birding, Horseback Riding, Administered by Bass River State Forest, Ocean/Burlington County Border New Jersey

Warren Grove Recreation Area is a 617-acre undeveloped wilderness area in the heart of the New Jersey Pine Barrens, straddling the Ocean and Burlington County border. Administered by the nearby Bass River State Forest, this protected area features the globally rare Dwarf Pine Plains (“Pygmy Forest”) where pitch pines and oaks grow only 4-6 feet tall, habitat for the federally endangered broom crowberry, sand roads and old woods roads for hiking and biking, excellent birding opportunities, horseback riding, hunting in season, and a completely undeveloped wilderness experience with no facilities or marked trails.

Dwarf Pine Plains — Pygmy Forest

Warren Grove’s most remarkable feature is its Dwarf Pine Plains, a globally rare ecological community where pitch pines and scrub oaks adapted to frequent wildfires grow to only 4 to 6 feet tall. This “pygmy forest” creates an otherworldly landscape unlike anything else on the East Coast. The harsh, nutrient-poor sandy soils and fire-dependent ecology have produced a unique habitat that supports several rare and endangered plant species, including the federally endangered broom crowberry and other Pinelands endemics.

Wilderness Recreation

As an undeveloped recreation area, Warren Grove offers a truly wild experience. There are no marked trails, restrooms, drinking water, or facilities — visitors navigate via sand roads and old woods roads. Activities include hiking, birding, bicycling, horseback riding, nature study, and hunting in season. The area is accessed via Beaver Dam Road near the former Warren Grove Gunnery Range. There are no entrance fees.

Ecological Significance

The Pine Barrens represent one of the most ecologically significant landscapes in the northeastern United States. The Pinelands National Reserve, which includes Warren Grove, was designated as the country’s first National Reserve in 1978 and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1983. The area supports a unique assemblage of fire-adapted plant communities found nowhere else in the world.
