Wildlife & Nature
Bob Straub State Park — named for Oregon’s conservation-minded governor (1975-79) — protects the pristine Nestucca Spit separating Nestucca Bay from the Pacific Ocean. The spit’s undeveloped dunes and beaches provide critical habitat for the western snowy plover — a federally threatened shorebird. Nestucca Bay is one of the most productive estuaries on the Oregon coast — supporting Dungeness crab, Pacific oysters, and bay shrimp. Bald eagles nest along the bay, and brown pelicans forage offshore. The bay’s eelgrass beds — underwater “meadows” — provide nursery habitat for juvenile fish and are vital carbon sinks. The park’s beachgrass-stabilized dunes demonstrate the ecological impact of European beachgrass (Ammophila arenaria) — introduced for erosion control, it has transformed Oregon’s naturally shifting dune systems.
