Wildlife & Nature
Neskowin Beach — a quiet, unspoiled coastal village — is famous for the “Ghost Forest” — the stumps of ancient Sitka spruce trees that were buried by an earthquake-induced landslide approximately 2,000 years ago and exposed again by tidal erosion in 1998. The stumps — visible at low tide — provide tangible evidence of the Cascadia Subduction Zone’s seismic activity. Proposal Rock — a forested sea stack accessible at low tide — is the beach’s visual centerpiece. The village’s undeveloped character supports wildlife — brown pelicans, cormorants, and gulls fish the nearshore waters. Bald eagles nest in the tall spruce behind the village. The absence of major tourist development makes Neskowin one of the most authentic coastal communities remaining on the Oregon coast.
