🚴 118 Miles Through the Last Tallgrass Prairie on Earth — Kansas’s Longest Rail-Trail, Rails-to-Trails Hall of Fame 2025, Santa Fe Trail Heritage, Bikepacking Guide — The longest rail-trail in Kansas crossing 118 miles of globally rare tallgrass prairie from Osawatomie to Herington, following the historic Santa Fe Trail through Council Grove, Ottawa, and Osage City, with cycling, hiking, horseback riding, prairie chicken viewing, and spring burn season — Franklin, Osage, Lyon, Morris, and Dickinson Counties, Kansas

The Flint Hills Trail State Park is the longest rail-trail in Kansas at 118 miles — and in 2025, it was inducted into the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Hall of Fame. But awards don’t capture what this trail actually is: a crushed-limestone ribbon cutting across the last remaining tallgrass prairie ecosystem on the planet, following the route that Santa Fe Trail wagon trains carved into Kansas 200 years ago.

From Osawatomie in the east — where John Brown fought to end slavery — to Council Grove in the west — where wagon trains made their last supply stop before 600 miles of open frontier — this trail crosses through five counties, a dozen small towns, and 10,000 years of human history. In spring, the Flint Hills burn. In summer, the grass grows taller than a rider on horseback. In fall, the prairie turns gold from horizon to horizon.

This is not a bike path. This is a journey through America.

Bikepacking the Flint Hills Trail

The trail is one of the best bikepacking routes in the Midwest. Here’s a practical 3-day itinerary for the main 96-mile section:

Suggested 3-Day Itinerary

Essential Bikepacking Tips

  • Bike choice: Gravel bikes, touring bikes, or mountain bikes. Skinny road tires will struggle on crushed limestone.
  • Water: Carry minimum 2 liters between towns. Not all trailheads have water. The Admire-to-Council-Grove stretch (35mi) has very limited water access.
  • Wind: The Flint Hills are notorious for wind. Ride east-to-west to use prevailing westerly winds (or face headwinds — plan accordingly).
  • Ottawa Bike and Trail: Your best resource — they rent bikes, do repairs, and publish a free “Field Guide” with detailed maps of water, lodging, and services.
  • Cell service: Spotty between small towns. Download offline maps before departing.

Council Grove — Where the Santa Fe Trail Ends

The western terminus at Council Grove is one of the most historically significant small towns in America. It’s worth spending a full day here:

SiteSignificanceDetails
Hays House (1857)Oldest restaurant west of the MississippiFounded by Seth Hays, great-grandson of Daniel Boone. Still serves dinner.
Last Chance Store (1857)Final supply stop before 600mi of frontierNational Register of Historic Places. Oldest commercial building in town.
Kaw Mission (1851)Kansa (Kaw) tribal history museumBuilt as a school for Kaw boys. Now tells the story of the Kanza people.
Council Oak1825 treaty siteWhere US commissioners met Osage leaders to guarantee Santa Fe Trail passage.
Allegawaho Heritage ParkKaw Nation’s last Kansas reservation168 acres, Kanza Heritage Trail, sacred Red Rock (Iⁿ’zhúje’waxóbe).

Fun fact: The state of Kansas is named after the Kanza (Kaw) people who stewarded this land for millennia before being forcibly removed to Oklahoma in the 1870s.

The Tallgrass Prairie — A Globally Rare Ecosystem

The Flint Hills contain the largest remaining swath of tallgrass prairie on Earth. Less than 4% of the original North American tallgrass prairie survives — and most of it is here, preserved by the rocky Flint Hills soil that prevented settlers from plowing it under.

Why You Should Care

  • Big bluestem grass grows up to 8 feet tall by late summer — taller than a person on horseback
  • Greater prairie-chickens perform spectacular mating dances (“booming”) on leks at dawn in March–April
  • Spring burns (March–mid-April) are a controlled fire tradition that’s maintained the prairie for centuries — the hills glow orange at night
  • Wildflowers peak in May–June with stunning diversity across the unplowed hills
  • The trail also connects to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve (just north) and Konza Prairie near Manhattan, KS

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to bike the whole trail?

2–4 days for most cyclists. The well-maintained 96 miles from Osawatomie to Council Grove can be done in 2 hard days (~48mi/day) or a comfortable 3–4 days with sightseeing stops. Average bikepacking pace on crushed limestone is 10–15 mph.

Is the trail paved?

No — it’s crushed limestone. The surface is hard-packed and well-maintained, but not paved. Gravel bikes, touring bikes, and mountain bikes all work well. Skinny road tires (23–28mm) will struggle. Aim for 35mm+ tires.

Where do I get water between towns?

Plan carefully. Not all trailheads have water. The 35-mile stretch from Osage City to Council Grove has very limited water access. Carry at least 2 liters (3 in summer). Ottawa Bike and Trail’s free “Field Guide” maps every water source.

What makes the Flint Hills globally significant?

Less than 4% of North American tallgrass prairie survives — and most of it is right here. The rocky Flint Hills soil prevented settlers from plowing the native grass. This trail crosses through a landscape that once covered 170 million acres from Canada to Texas.

When do the Flint Hills burn?

March through mid-April. Ranchers and land managers conduct controlled burns that have maintained the prairie for centuries. The hills glow orange at night and turn vivid green within weeks. It’s spectacular — but check for trail closures and expect smoke.

Can I ride horses on the trail?

Yes — the trail is equestrian-friendly. Several trailheads have parking designed for horse trailers. The flat, wide surface is excellent for riding.

Is Council Grove worth visiting?

Absolutely — it’s one of the most historic small towns in America. Hays House (1857, oldest restaurant west of the Mississippi), Last Chance Store, Kaw Mission, and the Kanza Heritage Trail are all within walking distance. Plan at least half a day.

Is this part of a longer trail system?

Yes. The Flint Hills Trail connects to the Prairie Spirit Trail in Ottawa (51 miles south to Iola) and is part of the American Discovery Trail — a coast-to-coast route from Delaware to California.
