Marblehead Lighthouse State Park lies along a rocky peninsula that reaches out into one of the Great Lakes, only 55 miles east of Toledo. The lighthouse, Marblehead Lighthouse, is one of Lake Erie’s most photographed landmarks. It is also one of the oldest lighthouses still in operation on the Great Lakes.
This Ohio state park features tours of the lighthouse, the Keeper’s House Museum, and a replica 1876 US Lifesaving Station.
Visitors enjoy climbing the lighthouse’s winding staircase and witnessing the breathtaking views of Lake Erie, Sandusky Bay, Cedar Point, Kelleys Island, and South Bass Island.

Lighthouse Tours at Marblehead Lighthouse State Park
Marblehead Lighthouse has guided sailors safely along its rocky shoreline since 1822. From Memorial Day to Labor Day each year guests may climb the 77 steps along the circular staircase that leads to the top of the Marblehead Lighthouse for a nominal fee. The view from above looks out over Marblehead Peninsula and the rocky shoreline along Lake Erie.

Museum at Marblehead Lighthouse State Park
After climbing to the top of the Lighthouse, stop in and check out the Keeper’s House Museum. Inside this museum you get a glimpse into the life of the original lighthouse keepers and learn more about the lighthouse’s history and that of the local community. Interested in seeing more? Take a drive over to the Wolcott House and take a tour of the first lightkeepers family home.
Marblehead Lighthouse State Park also features a replica 1876 US Lifesaving Station. This Lifesaving Station Museum lies near the Lighthouse and features historical exhibits, a restored 27-foot Coast guard rescue boat, and information on boating safety.
The Lighthouse Gift Shop carries souvenirs and memorabilia such as apparel, posters, postcards, magnets, and stickers.
Birding at Marblehead Lighthouse State Park
During spring migration hundreds of species of birds have been sighted along the Lake Erie shoreline. Many believe that this area is one of the best bird watching spots in all of North America. Visitors with binoculars may be rewarded with a glimpse of a Bald Eagle, Black-crowned Night Heron, American Coot, Red-breasted Merganser, Ring-necked Duck, Eastern wood-Pewee, Double-breasted Cormorant, or even an American Blackbird.

Marblehead Peninsula is a narrow strip of land with a rocky shoreline that extends into Lake Erie, one of the world’s largest freshwater lakes. This large lake is one of the Great Lakes that also includes Michigan, Ontario, Superior, and Huron lakes. The islands around Marblehead Lighthouse support a variety of fish and reptiles.

- Kelleys Island State Park has a lakeside campground, Yurts, and Sherman Cabins. Campsites (full-hookup, electric, or non-electric sites) are situated near restrooms and showers.
- South Bass Island State Park’s campground features full hookup and electric campsites and Cabents. The Cabents, a combination of tent and cabin, have sturdy walls with a canvas roof. Each sleeps 6 and has a small kitchen, furnished living area with tv, and a bathroom with shower.
- north bass island State Park is a secluded park accessible only by private boat or aircraft. Their overnight accommodations include a 4 bedroom fully furnished lake house that sleeps 10-12 guests.
- Middle Bass Island State Park features primitive non-electric campsites and overnight dockage from early May to mid-October each year. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire ring. And access to drinking water and showers.
