Milburn Landing is one of two areas within Pocomoke River State Park on Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore in Worcester County, managed by Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Milburn Landing features camping in a bald cypress swamp — the northernmost natural stand of bald cypress trees on the East Coast, tent and RV campsites along the Pocomoke River, canoeing and kayaking on the dark tannic-water Pocomoke River through cathedral-like cypress forest, fishing for largemouth bass, chain pickerel, bluegill, and catfish in the river and adjacent ponds, nature trails through loblolly pine forest and cypress swamp ecosystems, a boat launch providing paddling access to miles of protected river corridor, and a unique Eastern Shore camping experience that feels more like the deep South than Maryland.
The cypress swamp is botanically extraordinary — bald cypress trees with their distinctive buttressed trunks and “knees” rising from dark tannin-stained water create an atmosphere more associated with Louisiana bayous than the mid-Atlantic. This is the northernmost natural occurrence of this ecosystem on the entire East Coast.
The Pocomoke River is perfect for paddling — slow-moving dark water winds through overhanging cypress canopy creating a tunnel-like experience. Bald eagles, great blue herons, and river otters are commonly spotted along the banks.
