Best Time to Visit
Summer (June–August) is peak season for beach parks like Cape Henlopen and Delaware Seashore. Fall is excellent for fishing, hiking, and birding with fewer crowds. Spring (May) brings the horseshoe crab spawning at Delaware Bay — one of the state’s most remarkable natural events. Winter is mild along the coast and offers peaceful beach walks and birding.
Visitor Tips
Assawoman is a state wildlife area of the Delaware Division of Fish & Wildlife, not a state park, so the state park entrance fee and pass do not apply. Instead, most visits by car need a Conservation Access Pass: $32.50 a year or $10 for three days with Delaware plates, $65 or $20 for out-of-state vehicles. You do not need it to launch a boat, fish or crab at Sassafras and Mulberry Landing, the Strawberry Landing dock and pavilion, or Memorial Pond.
