What is the Fall Line?
The Fall Line runs along the East Coast from New Jersey to Alabama — where hard Piedmont bedrock meets soft Coastal Plain sediments. Rivers drop over rapids at this transition, creating waterfalls that powered colonial mills. Major cities were built at the Fall Line — Baltimore, Washington, Richmond, Raleigh, Columbia. The Fall Line also marks where rivers become navigable from the ocean, making these sites natural trading centers.
